College Student Credit Card

********

Every fresh college student has dreams of a better life. And by better I mean one that's free from parental control, rules, curfews, and watchful eyes. They foresee a new lifestyle that consists of great parties, dating, staying out late, and basically doing and acting as they please. Now, while some of this may come true, a few other aspects are presented that they didn't expect. Take cash flow for instance. It doesn't exactly amount to much during your University days. This tends to be a shocker for most college kids at first. Well, at least the ones that don't have daddy paying their way. Now comes the college student credit card. If you've had a taste of college life, then you've probably already applied for a few of these. My advice to you is to not get carried away!

I have a daughter who's trudging through her first quarter of college right now. I caught her crying the other day and had to ask what was wrong. She told me she thought college would be so much better than this. Naturally I wasn't sure what she meant. It could clearly be a number of things. Well, after speaking with her a bit, it came down to time and money. She didn't have enough of either one. Since she lives at home, her food and place to stay are free of charge. That is one huge bill to not have! Her only costs are her car insurance, gas and text books. Not bad if you ask me. We covered the tuition fees. However, she still says she's broke all the time and has to spend too many hours doing homework. To this I said "Welcome to college life." She then replied with a spiel about a college student credit card. I knew this would come. Anyway, she went ahead and applied for a few and received one college student credit card with a 0 APR fixed. The only catch is you can't exceed 200 dollars. Of course if you do. Your rate will shoot up to like 18.6 percent. YIKES! I told her from the get-go, that's all on her.

It's understandable that college students want credit cards. After all, most students lack capital in a big way. Once tuition, dorm fees, food and text books are covered, you're not left with much. This is where a college student credit card could be useful, whether for emergencies or plain old fun. Just be wary of the APR and how much you charge. If there's one thing I know about credit cards, it's that they often get out of hand.
